The State Bank of India (SBI), the flagship of Indian banking, has not only pioneered but also shaped India’s banking sector. But what is unknown to most people is that SBI is also among the most prominent custodians of India’s heritage. During its journey of more than two centuries, it has created some of the most imposing edifices in India, with some hailing back to the late nineteenth century. Remarkably, only a few of these edifices have undergone major changes over the years, while most remain as they were. Every stone, they say, tells a story and so does every edifice. Some of these stories are true, others are mostly yarns passed on from one generation to another. SBI’s Living Heritage: Edifices and Beyond is a truly amazing visual documentation of these wonderful edifices and their stories. This book will make the past come alive with rare photographs and old documents from SBI’s archives as well as private collections, while beautifully capturing the present, in the case of SBI Chairman’s residence, Dunedin, through photographs by renowned photographer Amit Pasr icha. This book will not only arouse curiosity, but also stir memories.
