One of D.H. Lawrence's last novels, The Man Who Died (1929) originally published as The Escaped Cock, is the story of the death and resurrection of Christ and the agonizing journey he must make to return from death to life. A work of passion and intensity, it mingles the sacred and the profane, travelling far beyond the traditional Christian interpretation of Christ's life and death. It is a novel that demonstrates, above all, the extraordinary vision of Lawrence and his fear for mankind.
